When we think of American stars in France, we often picture glossy travelogues like Emily in Paris. However, there is a richer, more daring tradition: Hollywood heavyweights ditching the blockbuster machine to star in authentic French productions. These are films led by French directors, produced by French houses, and often performed in the French tongue.
1. Breathless (À bout de souffle, 1960) – Jean Seberg
The blueprint for the American-in-Paris archetype. Jean-Luc Godard’s masterpiece wouldn’t be the same without Jean Seberg’s pixie cut and her “New York Herald Tribune” t-shirt. She brought a cool, detached American modernism to the birth of the French New Wave.
2. Jeanne du Barry (2023) – Johnny Depp
In his first major role in years, Johnny Depp didn’t look to Hollywood, but to Versailles. Playing King Louis XV, Depp speaks entirely in French. It is a restrained, physical performance that leans into the opulence and rigid etiquette of Maïwenn’s period drama.

3. Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) – Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart made history here, becoming the first American actress to win a César Award. Playing the sharp-witted assistant to Juliette Binoche, Stewart proved her indie-darling status in this cerebral, meta-fictional drama by Olivier Assayas.
4. A Very Long Engagement (2004) – Jodie Foster
Many fans don’t realize Jodie Foster is fluently bilingual. In Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s WWI epic, she plays Elodie Gordes. She doesn’t just “get by” in French; she performs with such linguistic nuance that she didn’t even require a voice double for the French release.
5. The New World (Le Nouveau Monde, 1995) – Alicia Silverstone & James Gandolfini
Directed by Alain Corneau, this is a fascinating coming-of-age story set in the 1950s. Alicia Silverstone stars as a young American girl living at a US military base in France. Interestingly, a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini appears as her father, bringing a grounded, heavy American presence to this very French exploration of 1950s cultural shifts.

6. Far from Men (Loin des hommes, 2014) – Viggo Mortensen
Based on a short story by Albert Camus, this “French Western” features Viggo Mortensen as a schoolteacher in the Atlas Mountains during the Algerian War. Mortensen, a noted polyglot, delivers a soulful performance speaking French, Spanish, and Arabic.
7. Holy Motors (2012) – Eva Mendes
Leos Carax is known for his wild, uncompromising visions. In this surrealist trip through Paris, Eva Mendes plays a high-fashion model kidnapped by a bizarre creature (Denis Lavant) and taken to a sewer-lair. It’s a wordless, haunting, and utterly French role.

8. Two Days in Paris (2007) – Adam Goldberg
While Julie Delpy is a star in both worlds, this is a distinctly French production. Adam Goldberg plays the quintessential neurotic American boyfriend lost in a sea of French ex-lovers and eccentric parents. It’s a witty, biting look at cultural clashes in the Marais.
9. Paris-Manhattan (2012) – Woody Allen
In this charming rom-com about a pharmacist (Alice Taglioni) obsessed with Woody Allen, the legendary director actually appears as himself. While the movie is a French-language production through and through, Allen shows up for a key moment to give the protagonist advice, playfully leaning into the French public’s long-standing adoration of his work.
10. Mr. Blake at Your Service! (2023) – John Malkovich
John Malkovich has lived in France for years and has a deep history with their cinema. In this 2023 dramedy (originally titled Complètement cramé !), he plays Andrew Blake, a widowed businessman who takes a job as a butler at a French manor. Malkovich spends much of the film speaking French, showcasing the “Franco-American” essence he has cultivated over his career.
