A masterful thriller from Alain Guiraudie and one of the most talked-about French films of the year, ‘Misericordia’ is finally hitting US theaters.
What is Misericordia about?
The film follows Jérémie, portrayed by Félix Kysyl, who returns to his hometown of Saint-Martial to attend his former boss’s funeral. He stays with the widow, Martine (Catherine Frot), during his visit. Tensions arise between Jérémie and Martine’s son, Vincent (Jean-Baptiste Durand), culminating in a fatal altercation where Jérémie kills Vincent. With the unexpected assistance of the village priest (Jacques Develay), who offers him an alibi in exchange for his affection, Jérémie attempts to conceal his crime.
Reception in France and Accolades
In its home country of France, ‘Misericordia’ was met with widespread critical acclaim. The film was honored with the prestigious Louis Delluc Prize for 2024. Additionally, it received eight nominations at the 50th César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Alain Guiraudie, Best Original Screenplay, and acting nominations for both Jacques Develay and Catherine Frot. Despite these numerous nominations, the film did not secure a win at the César Awards.
