The master of the French psychological drama, Arnaud Desplechin, is back in American theaters this May with his latest work, Two Pianos. Known for his intricate explorations of family secrets and romantic entanglements (A Christmas Tale, My Golden Days), Desplechin delivers a “Hitchcockian” experience that blends the elegance of classical music with the haunting tension of a ghost story. Anchored by a powerhouse cast, the film promises to be one of the most sophisticated French releases of the season.

The Story: A Rhapsodic Homecoming

After years of self-imposed exile in Japan, acclaimed pianist Mathias (François Civil) returns to his hometown of Lyon. He has been summoned by his former mentor, the formidable Eléna (Charlotte Rampling), to perform a series of high-stakes concerts together. Mathias was once Eléna’s star pupil, and their reunion is thick with unspoken history and musical intensity.

However, the harmony is shattered when Mathias spots a child in the streets who bears an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to himself. This chance encounter sends him spiraling into a psychological turmoil that threatens his career and reignites a passionate flame with his first love, Claude (Nadia Tereszkiewicz). As the past and present collide, Mathias must navigate a labyrinth of memory and desire to find his way back to the light.

Why You Should See Two Pianos

Critics are particularly praising the chemistry between the legendary Charlotte Rampling and the rising star François Civil.

“An ideal example of what a prestige film should be… Charlotte Rampling delivers her best performance in years,” notes C.J. Prince of The Film Stage.

The film successfully balances the emotional weight of a “full-throated melodrama” with the stylistic flourishes of a thriller. Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter highlights how the film is “punctuated by haunting Hitchcockian flashes,” leading the audience through “angsty emotions to a place of unexpected brightness and clarity.” For fans of cinema that engages both the heart and the intellect, Jonathan Romney of Screen International describes it perfectly as a “rhapsodic piece about love, death, music and memory.”
